If you choose to drink in the evening, don't consume starches during the day. Also drink lemon water to help with water retention. Also when I visit family and I know that there will be a lot of food around I chew gum or brush my teeth. That usually helps prevent me from snacking because some flavors don't mix with minty gum/toothpaste. Enjoy yourself and don't beat yourself up for slip ups.
