**WATER RETENTION REALITIES**

If a person is hydrated to begin with, water retention shouldn't really be too much of factor.

Carbs and sodium will bind with water molecules for a short time then flush a day or two later, but if you find yourself retraining water, the best solution is  DRINK MORE WATER!

It's a type of feast-or-famine: if you're regularly hydrated, your body doesn't need to retain water. But if it goes through drought cycles it hangs onto it.... we're mostly made of the stuff and it's used in ALL bodily functions!

SALTY MEAL? Drink lots of water.  DRINKING ALCOHOL? Drink lots of water (it cures hangovers too; which is mostly from dehydration).  HIGH CARB DAY? Drink lots of water. PMS, CONSTIPATION, or WORKING OUT? Guess what... yup 👌

And I'm talking about water-water. Not coffee, tea, juice, soda.... just plain ol' water with nothing added.

Not just in the summertime either. When you're thirsty it means you've waited too long. Drink regularly and you won't find yourself thirsty!

Sure, it's inconvenient to have a bottle with you at all times and always needing to pee, but that actually gets better as you train your bladder, FYI.

But by doing this, you'll improve your weight loss in at least two ways:

(1) You won't retain cyclical water. Your body will flush itself faster and the scale weight won't stay higher from the aforementioned scenarios.

(2) And COOL water will actually cause you to burn more calories due to the fact that you're lowering your core temperature by drinking it. Your body needs more energy to bring it back up to temp, so win-win! 🤘

What we call "retention" is simply a pre-flush status in the cycle. But the cycle can be eliminated by increasing your water intake on a regular basis!

Adding lemon juice, no sugar helps. Or better yet Apple Cider Vinegar. 2 teaspoons/liter . https://www.webmd.com/diet/apple-cider-vinegar-and-your-health

Then why do I take so many diuretics for pulmonary and peripheral edema?

Yep as Chris said 👍. My uncle retains water for a lack of a better word. His diuretics help take the water off because too much water hurts his health. He’s diabetic, high blood pressure and has major heart issues (has one of those things that shocks his heart occasionally). Or at least that’s the way my aunt explained it to me.

I forgot to mention that my main source of edema is a result of cardio edema. I've had bouts of intense water retention in the past and have even been hospitalized multiple times as a result. Until I was prescribed a regiment of diuretics, and at times fluid intake restrictions, my weight could fluctuate upwards of 10 or more pounds per day. I would suggest to anyone that is experiencing any form of bloating abnormality they are accustom to not to hesitate and consult their physician. There could be unseen underlying issues. P.S. I am male if that factors into a hormonal equation.

Chris, funny story. My aunt wouldn’t do that however... he was getting shocked repeatedly so they went to the dr. I’m guessing this is painful but fast bursts so he said like someone pinched his heart real fast. Dr checked him out and nothing. Kept happening so went back. Finally dr ran some tests and found that it was malfunctioning. Had to wait a few more weeks for them to get in there and reset it. So he was getting mini shocks a few times a week for like 3 months lol. We tease him that someone from above was messing with it to remind him not to be doing whatever he was doing when it shocked him lol. At one point it kept him from eating a lot of junk because he wondered if that was part of the cause after our teasing :). When his dr found out that he was eating better and moving more he joked about not resetting it for a few more months ;).

A great reminder Chris. @Dillon - like so many things unfortunately there are some people with medical conditions that the usual advice just doesn’t work for them. Since you’re on medication you’d need to speak with your Doctor about whether this would suit you before drinking loads of water. Compare it with the usual advice to eat plenty of fibre to keep you gut healthy. Fine for the majority of people but for some suffering some types of IBS it would leave them crippled with pain so they have to avoid fibre.
