You aren't a failure. As you said you simply need to plan and then stick to it. Take some things you can snack on. Beef snack sticks, cheese sticks, pork rinds. And be sure to eat before you go, and keep a bottle of water in your hand at all times. When you get the urge to eat, drink some water. Family gatherings and special occasions are hard, but you can do it.
