** CALORIES PART 1 **

I know I'm asking for a fight when I pop this puppy up, but as we argue, please take the time to hear what each person says and relax the dogma for a moment. All arguments have validity, so play nice, kids.

Personally, I've got my dietary act together. I can control my weight up, down, or sideways. That's not me bragging; that's pointing out a fact to preface what I'll say next...

Many of my friends here on FatSecret don't have this benefit. Some are dying to lose even half a pound because of a 3-week stall.

We are not all the same. We hear it all the time on here. "Just do ____" or "just try eating more/less ____" is the resounding anthem of advice to those who struggle.

Eventually, someone drops the CICO card and then the smackdown begins and we cross our arms and walk away mad and the person seeking support is spinning their head like "WTF, mate?!"

I'm very moderate in my views - not diehard regarding CICO because it does have a few holes in its science, but the  general principal stands true: having less calories consumed than exerted - over time - forces the body to use adipose body fat for energy.

I was doing some research and learning a bit from the likes of Dr. Jason Fung as he is a well-cited source in some circles within our community whose approach is - to simplify - that body fat is used when insulin is reduced (read it here: https://www.dietdoctor.com/first-law-thermodynamics-utterly-irrelevant).

You'll notice he picks a red herring; going hard after "thermodynamics". To be fair, I've thrown thermodynamics out there a few times myself, but it's not just parroted information for me. Certainly thermodynamics deals with heat, but it also encompasses VARIOUS ENERGY FORMS. Including calories, which is how we measure physiological energy.

But I digress... the hole I poke into CICO is that it's not just "in", "stored", and "out". What about "used" ala muscle production, organ function, etc. that remains within the body? There are anomalies like the kid that can eat anything and never gain weight.

Sleep, hormones, disease... there are many issues that separate us and make us unique. We must understand this when advising one another and there is no one box we all fit into.

There are principals that are universal though!

👍CALORIES ARE IMPORTANT👍

So, to end part 1 of this novel, I leave you with a quick synopsis of the history and function of a calorie. This is whacky, but spot-on, so please take a second to understand it better.

For me, sugar was definitely a problem. My grandfather died with DIABETES type 1 congestive and heart failure. Since I am predisposed it just made sense to me that I needed to find a solution to my risk. I already ate a high sugar Western Diet and read up on natural remedies for living with diabetes. I migrated to low carb and eventually Keto along with time restricted eating 1 pm to 9 pm every day. What I have experienced over the last 8 months was 65 lbs of weight loss and a renewed perspective of nutrition and my life. I also found that eating low carb in a small window of time creates a caloric deficit naturally. I just can't eat enough to be in surplus. For now I am fine with the deficit but I know as I approach my weight goal I will have to adjust my diet to fit my recomposition goals

yeah, but that's sort of the mantra I hear when I hear folks argue against a specific way of eating (especially Keto): Calories in, Calories out -- doesn't matter when or what. I've been told I don't know how many times that if I cut 500 calories a day I'll lose a pound a week. I'm not saying that invalidates the idea that you lose weight over time in a deficit, but it certainly seems there are folks who think there is a 100% accurate number.

good point though on the body should feel relief to lose when there's a lot to lose and fight when you're low BF % as a survival mechanism. Probably why it's easier to lose when you have a lot to lose and gets harder as time goes on lol

https://www.bmj.com/content/363/bmj.k4583 TLDR: low carb diet increases metabolism

@moopie321 link is broken. But, it wouldn't surprise me (about increasing metabolism)...I never much liked carbs, and eat primarily proteins.

Nitpicking here but (re: your original post) I wouldn’t call it “holes in the science” — models simplify things intentionally. Their job is not to explain in perfect detail, but to grant predictive power at some level of accuracy. (Perhaps you know, but I think it’s important to remind people that these things are tools, since it’s a common trick to use a model’s known limitations as evidence that it’s 100% wrong.)

Honestly, not sure I'll ever get tired of this stuff. Context and dosage people.

Well that was an interesting read, but I must ask: did Deadpool write that article? I mean, what's with the F-bombs?

At the end of the day, it is all about balance. Keto is a quick fix for a reunion or a wedding but it isn't sustainable as a lifelong way of maintaining weight. Any nutritionist worth their salt would agree, balance and portion control are the keys to long term weight management. It's not fast or dramatic but it can be forever. I've lost 120lbs over the last 10 months 100% on a balanced diet and reasonable activity. I eat something indulgent once a week so I don't feel "deprived" and keep the rest of my intake balanced. That plan came directly from my nutritionist and has been the most successful thing I've ever done in all of my years of fighting with my weight and for the first time I feel confident that I can maintain it forever.

On a more serious note, I am someone who struggles to lose 1/2 lb, and since I'm fast approaching 60 I know it's only going to get harder. For the record, I'd rather lose body fat than muscle, something the article didn't really touch. There was a brief bit on protein taking a bit more to digest, but other than that not much. Yes, weight loss is not as simple as CICO, but I still prefer CICO to fad diets. I also don't want to starve myself, because that will cost me muscle and at my age I can't afford to lose any! I might not get it back:(

Wiffey I don’t like to complicate things. weight loss “calories u need to consume”=current weight times (x) 10.11 or 12( adjust as needed) I never took into account my activity level, I always respond I’m sedentary
