** Aerobic vs Anaerobic Exercise **
Back in the days before Zumba and Kickboxing classes, "cardio" was called "Aerobics". It was all about sucking in air, increasing heart rate, and getting the blood oxygenated.
Resistance training restricts the oxygen level for a short time, then saturates the blood stream making it an anaerobic type of exercise.
Both are beneficial to heart health since they stress the organ and cause it to adapt and become stronger, but each produces much different physiological results on the rest of the muscles in the body.
The cardio workout is more likely to cause an individual to lose lean muscle tissue due to a lack of use unless the routine is full-body in nature (use-it-or-lose-it applies).
The advantage of resistance training then, is it will not only maintain muscle density, but likely contribute to a more well-rounded physique since most training regimens are set-up as full-body workouts.
GENERALIZATIONS: There are plenty of folks in any gym that have been lifting forever and carry lots of muscle mass, but their nutrition may likely lead to their demise because what and how they eat is above average in order to attain muscle.
However, the same may be said of the folks that run everyday and may be malnourished as they sometimes severely restrict their diet in an attempt to lose fat.
Exercise is an important factor in health, but nutrition even moreso.
-Diet to have great health and lose weight.
-Exercise to develop muscle and feel good.
