** CARBS, KETO, and EXERCISE **

✔ Consuming carbohydrates increases blood serum glucose levels which triggers a release of insulin to clear the excess glucose from the blood stream.

✔ Insulin shuttles the nutrients to either...
☝🏻 muscle/liver glycogen storage (carbs only) as high-intensity stored energy
✌🏻 fat storage cells (excess carbs or fats) as low-intensity stored energy
👌🏻 muscle fiber cells (protein) for repair and growth

✔ When muscles are stimulated/damaged during a workout, receptors activate like beacons to the insulin requesting nutrients to be deposited.

✔ Without exercise, the "default" for insulin is fat cell storage, so excess glucose (blood sugars) and triglycerides (blood fats) are likely stored in fat cells for later use.

✔ Without the presence of insulin, it is true the body has a harder time storing excess fat... but not impossible. Small excesses usually find other ways to be utilized/excreted from the body. Major caloric overdoses surely will be storing fat.

✔ Without insulin, the body cannot replenish glycogen or follow basic, biological protocol to repair muscle via muscle protein synthesis (MPS).

If you lead a fairly sedentary lifestyle without regular, strenuous exercise, keto or low carb diets may work for you and may be more forgiving if caloric intake is monitored and you can adhere to the diet.

However, though the body is capable of producing ketones as an energy source, this is not a viable option for intense exercise.

I, personally, used to power-lift while following keto and I'd feel so drained after a workout as the fuel isn't enough and post-workout recovery is just non-existent.

I also couldn't gain any muscle size.

In July of 2018, I'd begun to add significant amounts of carbohydrates into my diet and found the energy levels to be unreal! My maximum weights that I used to lift then are now laughable to me.

Carbs themselves didn't make me stronger, per se, but the energy they provide is unmatched by fats/ketones. They also activated the insulin required to grow the muscle.

To lose weight with minimal exercise, keto or low-carb may work for you, but the physical results will be limited (you'll likely just get skinny or skinny-fat).

To truly "work on your figure" means you'll need some carbs and exercise in the mix with a bit of protein and you'll reduce the fat and grow the muscles.

If you want washboard abs, you can get them with low-carb diets, but if you're of the larger variety now, you'll probably wind up with excess skin and exposed ribs, shoulder and hip bones as well, unfortunately.

To gain a health-looking, "toned" body that has nice muscle definition though, give yourself a little bit of carbs and at least A YEAR of CONSISTENT weight training.

The long-and-short of it is: KEEP YOUR CARB / EXERCISE / CALORIC RATIO IN BALANCE (carbs are potent, so use sparingly unless you exercise regularly).

You CAN do it! 💪

Thanks binkie❤️ I would have been a better mommy had I found fs sooner. I’m getting my life back day by day and every loss by loss. My babies deserve the ultimate best of me💕 I have an extra pep in my step, I’m smiling more, I’m more confident and I’m too young to be old, but beyond thankful that I realized, I’m not that young anymore. So complicated and so thankful.

JC...I feel you! Even when I was active, I wasn't about that gym life - until a coworker asked me to go with her once a week. I could walk from work straight to gym so very convenient. No longer working with her or at that job. I hated the gym but I definitely loved being physically active. Find something you like! I don't see myself going back to gym...more likely to slowly create one at home (lol). I know many with unused gym equipment at their homes that I am sure they would love to give away for a very small price. My mistake thus far was doing too much, too soon. So take it slow and don't go hard. Looking at this yoga burn DVD tonight and I like how it is in phases. They prepare your body for what is coming next. First teaching you how to perform each movement correctly before you even get into movements with more speed. I am so impatient when it comes to this so I am eye rolling, huffing, and puffing looking at it. LOL. But just like with dieting - results don't happen overnight and patience is required. Have to increase my exercise portions little by little until it becomes a habit again. Just like you try much with you WOE - it may have to work that way with moving more. I am still figuring it out, learning what works for me. And I am sure you'll find a way too! You always do with everything, it seems.

Court ❤️🙌💯💕 I’m just going to keep living. I’m going to do whatever I can and I love motivation. I would love a gym buddy, for me, it’s not easy with work and college and a husband who is loving all my success and super supportive, but I cannot live every moment online. I’m thankful for where I am now and so looking foreword to smashing out goals. You guys are my people, regardless of WOE. It’s easy to forget how meaningful this place here is to all of us when people are in maintenance, and be thankful for maintaining friends because you are living proof there is hope. ❤️💕

And I absolutely relate to the work, studying, partner, and cooking healthy parts and being online! You are doing what you are supposed to do. LIVING! Studying is the worst with being sedentary. I've slowly spent less time on FS - but will probably be fairly absent come October. My plan is to sleep by 10 and wake up around 5:30-6 to work out. That way, it is out of the way - will help me get in right frame of mind for rest of day - and I can continue as scheduled. That is my hope at least. We shall see...TBC

Thank you for this well thought out post! When you say a year of consistent working out, do you mean free weights or all weights? I’ve been working out religiously 3x a week since April. However I can’t remember when I started free weights. June or maybe July is my guess. Patience is important lol said the most impatient person ever. Again thanks for this post!

I think the human body is very adaptable. Look at the Inuit who have survived on an meat based diet, very little carbs. They live in the most inhospitable place on the planet and I don't think they could have managed if they were skinny fat. There are a wide variety of diets that work, the trick is to find the one that works for you.

I’m all about support and supporting ❤️ tips are always welcome and I’m appreciative ❤️ a WOE is life.. not a diet. It’s nice having you back Chris😊, hence the ❤️ hours ago.

I agree fatoldlady. I went to youtube and searched for keto and weight lifting and there are many who have built muscles with keto who have adapted. I have to conclude that some can certainly build muscles while on keto.

But is it b/c of fat or protein?

I got curious and did a quick goolge search about the inuit diet and found this interesting article. http://discovermagazine.com/2004/oct/inuit-paradox . It appears that fat where they get most of their calories. According to this article to much protien can actually be harmful.

Hey hi Chris. Love the info. I’ve only been lifting since May 30th (walking almost daily since Jan. 4th), and I can already see results! I appreciate the info.; hope everyone at your house is doing great! 😊🎈💪🏻

I worked in the arctic for several years and tried muktuk. Definitely something you have to be raised on. It was like gum with a very strong fish taste.

Well inuits are genetically adapted to their diet so hard to compare to an individual looking to make changes now...unless they are looking generationally to modify their DNA lineage.????

I was wondering if keto folks who gaun muscle..is it due to high fat or due to high protein?
