** CARBS, KETO, and EXERCISE **

✔ Consuming carbohydrates increases blood serum glucose levels which triggers a release of insulin to clear the excess glucose from the blood stream.

✔ Insulin shuttles the nutrients to either...
☝🏻 muscle/liver glycogen storage (carbs only) as high-intensity stored energy
✌🏻 fat storage cells (excess carbs or fats) as low-intensity stored energy
👌🏻 muscle fiber cells (protein) for repair and growth

✔ When muscles are stimulated/damaged during a workout, receptors activate like beacons to the insulin requesting nutrients to be deposited.

✔ Without exercise, the "default" for insulin is fat cell storage, so excess glucose (blood sugars) and triglycerides (blood fats) are likely stored in fat cells for later use.

✔ Without the presence of insulin, it is true the body has a harder time storing excess fat... but not impossible. Small excesses usually find other ways to be utilized/excreted from the body. Major caloric overdoses surely will be storing fat.

✔ Without insulin, the body cannot replenish glycogen or follow basic, biological protocol to repair muscle via muscle protein synthesis (MPS).

If you lead a fairly sedentary lifestyle without regular, strenuous exercise, keto or low carb diets may work for you and may be more forgiving if caloric intake is monitored and you can adhere to the diet.

However, though the body is capable of producing ketones as an energy source, this is not a viable option for intense exercise.

I, personally, used to power-lift while following keto and I'd feel so drained after a workout as the fuel isn't enough and post-workout recovery is just non-existent.

I also couldn't gain any muscle size.

In July of 2018, I'd begun to add significant amounts of carbohydrates into my diet and found the energy levels to be unreal! My maximum weights that I used to lift then are now laughable to me.

Carbs themselves didn't make me stronger, per se, but the energy they provide is unmatched by fats/ketones. They also activated the insulin required to grow the muscle.

To lose weight with minimal exercise, keto or low-carb may work for you, but the physical results will be limited (you'll likely just get skinny or skinny-fat).

To truly "work on your figure" means you'll need some carbs and exercise in the mix with a bit of protein and you'll reduce the fat and grow the muscles.

If you want washboard abs, you can get them with low-carb diets, but if you're of the larger variety now, you'll probably wind up with excess skin and exposed ribs, shoulder and hip bones as well, unfortunately.

To gain a health-looking, "toned" body that has nice muscle definition though, give yourself a little bit of carbs and at least A YEAR of CONSISTENT weight training.

The long-and-short of it is: KEEP YOUR CARB / EXERCISE / CALORIC RATIO IN BALANCE (carbs are potent, so use sparingly unless you exercise regularly).

You CAN do it! 💪

AMT, I would say the Inuit live in a region where growing any plants is difficult, and their diet is closer to our ancestors' pre-agricultural diet. Humans can use two different metabolic systems: Carb-based Glucose metabolism, and fact-based Ketone metabolism. The Inuit would seem to use ketones. Arctic explorers successfully adopted the Inuit diet, maybe they had some form of genetic predisposition but I doubt it. After 2 - 4 weeks on low carb, the body starts switching to the fat-based metabolism; after 4 - 6 months, it is fully fat-adapted and capable of producing as much glycogen as with the carb-based diet. I have seen a very rapid increase in strength since I began using weight training in June of this year, following 12 months of ketogenic WOE and 12 years of being sedentary.

that should be "fat-based" not "fact-based"

Hands down, it's because if protein. Carbs are just the fuel to cause better muscle stimulation and are a buffer to muscle catabolism. Protein is the building blocks of muscle.

Yeah, noob gains are just that. After that you want to optimize. And carbs are optimal.

Chris I have the same history as you (except I was 100 lbs overweight). I started with keto, but my workouts weren't where I wanted them to be. I added in carbs and I couldn't be happier with my workouts now. And I continued to lose weight, even with the carbs (I did have a little gain after adding carbs back in, but that was 100% water) it all evened out shortly after that gain and I continued to lose. Carbs can be your friend!!! Especially if you workout!!!! Good article.

I don't disagree about the need for protein. We'll just have to disagree about carb-based versus fat-based metabolism, Diablo.

Poor Inuits. It's not like they have a bodybuilding community. Just because you can make due, does not mean it is optimal. We're talking about what is optimal here. Like I said before, even keto dieters do cyclical keto. They carb load for a reason. It's science.

We have Chris, Kennyn, and Adef on this site who have better workouts with carbs. I'm not just putting keto down for muscle building for no reason. There are many examples on this very site.

Yes there is targeted keto diet and cyclical keto diet, where keto dieters go off keto temporarily.

I lift, do martial arts and circuit training. I noticed when I do strict keto my limbs go numb and recovery takes longer. Before these workouts I used to eat my carbs and that helps me not have tingling sensations. I did supplement with electrolytes. Standard keto dieting was perfect when I was injured and couldn’t work out.

And diablo, it's not like I was on keto for a week, I was super strict on it for about 5 months. That's when I started with resistance training and I could never get going. Then after about a month of eating keto, and resistance training I added carbs in. So I gave it a shot, but it just wasn't working. I am not bashing the keto lifestyle, I didn't mind eating that way, it's just that the carbs really did push me through my workouts, and it happened pretty quickly! It's just what works for me! Like you said, the best supplement for people who do resistance training!

Yep, and I'm pretty sure Chris was keto for years. Thanks for your input you two. *thumbs up* on my work PC, can't emote, lol.

AMT, keto is moderate not high protein. To build muscle, you need protein; but excess protein will be used (especially by T2D / pre-diabetics) to make glucose, so it's a balance.

Too much protein does not turn to too much glucose, body only makes enough to maintain blood sugar levels. Not sure about diabetics... https://hvmn.com/blog/ketosis/gluconeogenesis-how-the-body-makes-glucose#gng https://perfectketo.com/how-too-much-protein-is-bad-for-ketosis/ https://www.carbmanager.com/article/how-much-protein-should-you-eat-553e7522-80bf-a2e7-0033-e78582a3dede

I was never keto, if I was it was for weeks at a time since I've tried many diets since 1999 but I know I suffered perfromance wise when I would do low carb. The Cut diet, it was called. Consisted of a fat source and a protein source for all meals. The only carb I could have were grapefruit, lol.

Anyway, I did lose weight quickly but never got into great shape at that time. Pretty sure I lost lean mass. Adherence was an issue on the weekends as well, to say the least. If you can't stick to something, it doesn't matter how well it works.

Nice link, Moopie! That will be interesting, Chris!

I'm afraid I'll wake up looking like Nacho Libre if I did keto.

That plus even if I didn't go into a coma, I'd never be able to stick to it. I'm not a dieting machine like you. Now that I know I can have them while getting great results(even from junk), there is just no way I could do it, lol.

Keyten77 No fiber for me, due to they make me sluggish. Would go for organic white rice and find I haven't got any. Will get a small pack and try it. GI Tract friendly is important for me. Nutrition from plants is of zero importance.
