Diario de crabby Kat, 30 may. 13

Morning. Thank you for the kind and supportive comments on my last yucky-day journal two days ago. I appreciate you so much!

Yesterday started out well, with a great Zumba class with a really cool instructor (who friended me on facebook, my third instructor/friend). My foot held me back, and I was gentle with it. Still had a good time, a good workout.

I ran some errands and then headed for my appointment with my podiatrist. She stuck me in a boot, said to wear it for a month, only taking it off to bathe or sleep. A horrid torture device the goes all the way to my knee, totally incasing my foot & lower leg in a padded but rigid frame so it is basically unable to move at all.

I told the nurse that fitted it on me that I couldn't wear it, that it was hurting me knee, nearly hyper-extending it when I tried to walk. It has a rocker bottom and is higher than any shoe I own, so it sets my gait all wonky. The doctor was in the next room & could hear me. The nurse told me I would get used to it, and to call HER if I had any questions. I will be calling her shortly for a few words.

I wore the boot for maybe two hours at home, trying to get used to it. it jerked my right knee with each step, jolted my lower back and right hip. My muscles tightened and burned, revolting from the beating they were taking as I walked up and down the hall. And I'm not supposed to take the darn thing off and do my stretches?

I'm the person that does so well in Zumba, weight lifting, and core exercise classes because I use the proper form, do my stretches, use my foam roller, take care of my self. In two hours of my new "treatment" for my capsulitis of the second toe, my pelvis rotated in two directions, my knee was in severe pain & having muscle spasms, and my right hip was screaming.

The boot went back in the bag it came from, and this morning I'm calling the podiatrist's office. I do not want to pay for that torture device I told them wouldn't work for me, and I cannot wear it. The orthotic they made for me last week & I wore for a week actually increased my pain; 4 visits in 1 1/2 months + I'm in more pain = time to move on.

I managed to do a self-corection last night that my physical therapist taught me and my pelvis is mostly back in alignment, and then did all of my stretches, relieving some of the muscle tightness, though it was still difficult to get to sleep from the pain.

Next I'll call my primary care physician's office and request a referral to a different podiatrist for a second opinion. I hope I can be seen by my former podiatrist, who was out of town when I first requested to see a foot doctor & couldn't see me for a month, so I chose to go to the current (soon to be former) podiatrist.

I won't be going to Zumba for a while, let my Zumba instructors & friends know why & that I'll miss them (thanks to facebook). I was offered support, great suggestions, and the name of a good podiatrist. :o)

My partner brought me a nonfat latte before going to work to help wake me up for the tasks at hand. I enjoyed it with one of my home made whole wheat cranberry walnut scones that I split, toasted, and topped with a spread I made with a combination of plain nonfat greek yogurt and fresh ground almond butter; delish! I still think I need a shower to finish waking up before making my calls, so off I go....

UPDATE:

I returned the boot after speaking with the nurse & being assured I wouldn't have to pay for it. I formally requested chart notes from all my visits for my own personal records.

When I called my first podiatrist's office to request a second opinion, I was told that I needed to have my current podiatrist send my records over and my first podiatrist would go over them and decide if he would see me. They would call me to schedule an appointment if he did. Frankly, I want to see my records before then. Thanks to HIPAA I have the right to do so.
Just not sure when they will get the records to me.

Went shopping at New Seasons just for fun, got yummy healthy snacks. Looked at everything mindfully, with wonder, like everything was new. An employee offered me a sample of some kale chips I was considering.. opened a package. After I ate a piece with wonder, he tried it, then another employee tried a piece. I left the store smiling and serene, $26 poorer, but at peace with the world.

I am so sorry that the devices are making your ailments and pain worse and applaud you for being strong enough to tell that that it isn't working and not paying for stuff that doesn't work. Sometimes 'medical personnel' think they know more than they do, they think that they know better, but I think you know your body pretty well. So very proud of you and I do hope you see your 'usual' podiatrist soon. And hope that your discomforts, aches and pains get better soon because I know you love to exercise - boy, wish I could say the same:) And isn't your partner a sweetie bringing you a non fat latte? Awwwwww. Have an awesome day.

Thanks again, my buddies. I will be fine. I may eat a bit more than I burn, but I will adapt and come back to another new normal. Life is good.
