Have to share my experience with gaining recently and clothing sizes...AND I'm documenting this so I can go back and read it myself and remember this experience!

It's been crazy the past year gaining close to 40lbs after losing 100...

This clothing size experience should probably have been a "no duh" type situation but for some reason it never registered that my clothing size was going up as I gained...let's just call it complete denial??? But it might also be because I haven't ever really adhered to clothing sizes because my body so all over the place with sizes due to drastically different measurements in different areas of my body...at my biggest I had hips that were 54.75" but my rib cage was only 38" and my waist was 37" so if I tried wearing huge sizes they would never fit my waist so I would just buy XL dresses that were stretchy and never wore pants.

BUT - when I reached my lowest at 167 I started adhering to clothing size charts a lot more because my curves were more going more by the charts suddenly AND I also started wearing a lot of pants! And let me tell you something...pants are WAY less forgiving with weight gain! It is SO easy to gain 20lbs and wear the same stretchy dress but you can forget that happening when you're wearing pants! During my gain the thighs of my pants started getting tighter (funny I can FEEL that the left thigh is tighter than the right haha)...and then I'd have trouble zipping!

PANTS ARE YOUR FRIEND LETTING YOU KNOW YOU'VE GAINED!! DRESSES ARE NOT!!! LOL

Anyways...this was my rude awakening though - I was wearing 8/10 pants extremely consistently...my hips were around 42" and I knew my hips had gone up but was surprised to learn they went up to 46.5"

So I knew my size 10 pants were getting so tight that I was wanting a bigger size but when I went to the store and grabbed 12s they were tiny! so then 14s?? I thought surely not!!!! But then even 14s were tight sometimes!!! I was like OMG I'M PLUS SIZE AGAIN!!!??? NO WAY!!!!

But YES WAY.

So then I went and started looking at size charts on websites and saw 46.5" hips was putting me in 18s!!!! WHAT!!!????

So...I still have 10s that go on but are tight...but yes, when I go shopping most of the time I'm wearing 14/16 and so depressed that I did indeed make it back in to the plus sizes....and don't ask me why I feel like I'm in denial that 4" added could do that...

Anyways...for me, people that know me know that I have no issues with self discipline when I decide to buckle down...hey I could not eat anything for over 20 days...I can do anything...

But for me the battle is in my mind, and the problem with the mind is that it can change from hour-to-hour based on mindset and mood...

So my goal now is to find my happiness and learn to remain positive because that will help me with this more than anything.

I had a similar realization/ struggle this year. I live in leggings and yoga pants during colder months which are very forgiving with weight fluctuations. Summer arrived and NONE of my shorts fit, even my pair that was too big last summer. I guess a 25 pound difference means nothing to yoga pants but it means a whole lot when it comes to jean shorts!

I love how you think things through! You are a winner, Sharon, and it is so great to see you here more regularly! I wore skirts all the time for years... People probably thought I had something against pants or just liked looking more dressed up. 😁 I could hide a lot of fat with a smallish waist and loose skirt. Yay for jeans that help us when getting out a tape measure isn't happening. 😁 You have kept off the most part of a mighty big loss for a long time. We are cheering for you!

You are definitely on the right track. I had to quit wearing pants/clothes with no fixed waistline after about the first year of working from home. I'm just better off if I get dressed and my pants have a waistline.

A couple of mental health apps I recommend are sanvello and moodfit. I find them helpfully. Also The Zone , a journaling app. I think focusing on your mental health is really good idea. I personally find that when I am in a better place mentally, I eat better. Good luck!

I’m with you all the way. I was feeling quite low the past few years and my weight went up. My husband signed me up for the Life Line screening. To my surprise most of my tests were good except cholesterol. I started a health journey that night. It’s taken me 4 months to lose 21 lbs. because my age and my efficient metabolism. That said, I am focused on health and every lb lost and not regained is a step in the right direction. I walk 4-6x a week, try to do vigorous exercise 2-4x week and fluctuate between 900-1400 calories (too low means my body goes into starvation mode - too high and I gain even at 1400 cals). You have got this. Focus on how you feel and measure foods. You can get back into those tight clothes.

I can relate. This past year has been a roller coaster for me. My son is diabetic and went into kidney failure. He was on dialysis a long time getting ready for surgery. He had a kidney transplant just a year ago. I have a lot to lose, but set a short term goal and did pretty good with it, but lately, I am just tired of dealing and have let pounds creep up. Really need to get back to basics. I know I can do it. Have lost about 30 pounds since retiring, but have a ways to go. Emotional stress affects me.

I agree with you about wearing pants. Nothing like wearing good pants with real waistband to let us know when we're gaining. Spandex is the devil!!!👹🙈

You've got this Sharon. ❤ And just to add to the frustration, United States does not follow a sizing standard. Size charts can be all over the place. It really depends on the cut and design, so don't put too much into the size. I completely agree, this is such a mind game. ❤

You just described my “work clothes” closet- about 30 dresses but only 5 pairs of pants. I wore the same dresses at 250 that I wear now at 300. Perhaps I need to buy more pants in the future... Sharon, congratulations on your weight loss!
