Entered my first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition in Boise, Idaho at age 43, 162 lbs. I've been training off and on for 3.5 years now. Tapped a guy out by landing a cool judo throw, sending him flying over my head and then doing a guillotine choke. Then got bloodied and tapped out by a guy way more skilled and stronger than me!

All in all, by placing 2nd in my division I couldn't have asked for a better result: I won a fight by using solid techniques, then got beat in an awesome match by someone who truly deserved the gold, helping me set further training and fitness goals.

And I wouldn't be here today without FatSecret! When I started training I could go max 3x a week. I would go home and pass out after struggling to fight with 45lbs of dead weight on my body. Today I go 7x a week and easily hold my own against taller and stronger 25 year olds. I feel like I've found the fountain of youth.

Pictures...

Before: 205 lbs on 8/5/2019
After: 161 lbs on 6/16/2021 (gee, you think BJJ is good for your core? LOL)

Final goal: 155 lbs, 8% body fat (need to do calisthenics and bulk up after hitting 150 lbs!)

@Piggy Winkle Just get in there and train! I've been doing it for 3.5 years, and only in the past year have I felt like I really "belong" at my BJJ gym. The rest of the time I felt like Kung Fu Panda: fat, clumsy, in the way, a walking joke! It was over two years of getting ground down, beaten, submitted, and feeling inadequate. THIS IS HOW IT IS DONE. The person that comes out the other side of this journey will be incredible. Who you are now, will admire and fear that person if you ran into them on the street. ---- What I'm saying is, just go and do it. When something is that far outside your comfort zone, it's a big clue that you need to try it to grow.

@Eral66 The improvement in my self image has been tremendous. You might consciously be unaware of how out of shape you are, but subconsciously you feel it. You compensate for the insecurity in weird and unhealthy ways. For the first time I feel like I have a...physically objective and empirical reason to respect myself? It's hard to describe. Getting into shape has created a foundation for self respect that I'm now working hard to extend to other areas of my life.

@gassenins. Appreciate the response. I'm nearly in shape already. Except cardio. Looking to add activity post cut to help me stay lean. And happy. Never learned to fight as a kid, raised two BJJ/MMA/wrestling sons and see what it has done for them. Only concern is my decrepit old joints. I think it's BJJ or climbing....

@jimmiepop Cardio for BJJ is not a huge concern. Many people come into the gym in great shape and still get smoked, because it's so different from other activities. Not many people run a triathlon using only their core! As for your joints, it largely comes from what sort of game you'll have on the mat. 99% of injuries come from the "scramble", where you're wrestling on the mat between bona fide positions. People also tailor their roll to who they're sparring with, as it's such a collaborative activity. Play an old guy's game, go slow and use technique, use old man strength, pick your partners wisely, and you'll do just fine!
