Walked the usual 3.3 miles this AM w/doggies along for their usual 2.6 miles. Another gorgeous, sunny day with bright blue skies. It was a tad cooler this AM....like mid-60's, but the sun was warm enough to wear shorts and, eventually, a short-sleeved t-shirt.

My one dog has been after some critter in or near the heat pump for the pool. After much consternation in trying to get him otherwise distracted over a few days, I had a look. I can only get part of this appliance apart but it looked like a leafy nest of some sort with some twigs and other assorted lawn type debris. I went to gingerly clear it out, but discovered I need to dismantle it more and I'm not exactly sure how to do that. Anyway, I tried to look through the top and eventually saw a pair of beady eyes looking up at me. Yup, a mouse or perhaps a larger version, I don't know. (Where's a good neighborhood cat when you need one...)

Well, off to Wally World to get a mouse trap. The kind I want is one of those boxes where they go in and don't come out and you just throw the whole thing away. That's what I found but when I got home to tell DH to bait it, we discovered that this particular box just "traps" the critter and then WE have to either relocate it or do the deed.

EXCUSE ME???? Relocation???!!! Since when is that even an option for mice? I had no idea that mice were some kind of endangered species that ought to be released in the wild. Or are there sanctuaries for mice that I don't know about?

Well Mr. or Ms. Rodent got a 1-day reprieve. Tomorrow, I'm off to Lowe's or someplace else that has an actual trap that will kill the varmint. And then I need to work on taking apart the heat pump to get all that nest material cleaned out. Believe me, I'll be wearing rubber gloves and a mask....no hantavirus for me!

The snap ones are the most humane. Whatever you do don't go for the glue traps. Those are so terrible. They will literally cry for days while they eat their limbs off til you can kill them. But by all means - kill them. Just quickly.

Sandy that is funny....we don't much problem with mice, even living in the woods, as the 5 cats make short work of them. lol Hope you caught the critter. I have to agree with Keli on the glue traps...it is terrible, and then you either have to listen to them or you have to do the deed.

Oh, I couldn't do any glue traps! How terrible! Yes, the snap ones are the only ones we'd consider. Perhaps the "trap only" thingies are for those people who catch wild mice for their pet snakes??? Whatever the reason, they're certainly NOT the traps I want. I did find the "right" kind at Lowe's today. Although it appears the varmint is gone (see today's journal), I now have 2 new traps just waiting for any return visitors.
