For Suma
Modigliani: Roma Woman with Baby (1919)
National Gallery of Art, Washington DC

Controlled yet intense, you can hear his brush strokes as they left his quiet anguish on the canvas.

ChurchM, the model is a Roma (gypsy), and I’m certain that she was intimate with the brutality of life. Modigliani though, was more preoccupied with the forms rather than emotion, and I always sense icy detachment in his brush strokes. Paradoxically though, the emotional distance he creates intensifies the sad colors of this woman’s eyes, and it affects me deeply. It’s interesting you mentioned the “drabness” of the wall, the grey shadow behind her, I was very drawn to that last week. Its effect is not conveyed via photograph, unfortunately🥲

Oh no! I lived there until 2002. I've been to countless concerts at Wolf Trap, One Step Down, Bauhaus, The Cellar Door. At the Kennedy Center I saw Phantom, Second City, and have taken numerous dates to Sheer Madness. Les Mis at Ford Theatre. I could live in the Museum of Natural History amongst the dino bones and gemstones. I loved bumping into all the politicians on the Hill and walking across the bridge to meet friends in Rosslyn, VA. My brother still lives in Alexandria. I even miss the Metro (I didn't drive while living there. You need a car in California.)

I think the cellar door has been gone for decades.. I happen to know the area through people, I am a lowly visiting nurse and I get to know people as who truly they are, and it has not been very pleasant. To be honest I detested many of my clients, but they cling to me desperately, they think they own me 24/7. That’s DC for you. Sorry for venting, I need to relocate. Don’t let my venting ruin your fond memories of DC.

Ms. Fritz, spending time with sick or injured people is not a barrel of monkeys. You need a beer crawl in Dupont Circle with happy people. I think it may be the company you keep. If I still lived there, we'd put on some lipstick and hit the town, dance with young pups and laugh.

🍌🤣🤣🤣 I did a bar crawl in DuPont Circle, 2012. The worst night ever!🤣 You’re right though, I’m surrounded by wrong people, I haven’t met anyone I could call true friends here in DC. Yes they try to befriend me but they are inherently transactional people and I haven’t experienced genuine affection. I feel so isolated. So alone. I don’t want to die here.

I moved to California after a 4 day business trip. Literally 7 months after that trip, I moved. The first year I got my motorcycle license, learned to surf, and dated a Navy Seal (not recommended). Got acupuncture, moved into flip flops year-round, and traded foundation for sunblock. I went all-in. I live at the beach now. And it all started with a business trip (I knew no one out here). I would suggest traveling around to find a place to retire -- or land even sooner. I thought that you had moved south for a while -- Louisiana or Alabama.

🍌🍌🍌 Louisiana or Alabama it is then. I like the South. I’ll avoid Navy Seals, will aim to date a gruff bubba with a pickup truck, might get a rifle license, and🎵gonna go huntin’🎵
