They say it's much better for you to eat your main meal earlier.

Actually a good idea! It's how most Europeans' eat. I grew up having the biggest meal at lunch and a light dinner if open faced sandwiches and fruit for dinner.

My next door neighbors eat their “dinner” between 9-10 pm.

Snowwhite100– yes it is ideal because you are still up and about, burning calories. after dinner a night we are tired and full and many of us don’t even want to go out and do thAt 15 minute walk that is recommended about an hour after last bite. Then some continue to eat into the night which can delay the body’s ability to enter into heal and repair mode because it is still busy with digestion.
