thankyou I Will Win. Giles the 1700 and 1450 calories is a bit of a head scratcher for me and i will try to explain it. this time last year i was eating low fat and i weighed 10st (half a stone heavier than now), i decided i didn't want to lose anymore (i ad already lost 3st) so i went to the recomended daily cal allowance for maintaining, this was 1600 cals a day. over a month i consistenly put a bit of weight back on each week so i dropped the number to 1450 and that worked to keep my weight stable. after a couple of month i changed to low carb and dropped another half a stone to what i weigh now. i was still eating 1450 cals a day but now eating low carb and now losing again. i then decided i had lost enough weight i was now past my original goal weight so it was time to maintain. i set my calories this time at 1700 and am steady in my weight. now the head scratcher for me is how come i can eat high fat and consume 1700 cals a day and not put weight on whereas before when eating low fat i could only eat 1450 cals a day before i started to add pounds? i am not doing anymore exercise

I don't know. Maybe someone on your nutrition course will be able to tell you. Maybe you don't have your heating turned up so high, lol ;)

it certainly is a weird one

You seemed so adamant before that the reason was the high-fat diet. I think its a bit un-scientific to jump to that conclusion, its what you would call confirmation bias.

Being "un-scientific" must be allowed as I suspect non of us are scientists !

@I will win, of course, but then we shouldn't criticize scientific studies either.

cheers @Giles. i think i might want to become qualified. because of my epilepsy i had to give up work, i have been looking for something i could work at home online with. nutrition sounds good as its something i'm really interested in as well. but i will tap into those videos, it is always good to get good info

@drullae, Just a heads up the lady holds a very mainstream view. But I hope you go into it with an open mind even if you don't believe in the principles she talks about. By the way did you doctor put you on this ketogenic diet to control your epilepsy or was it self prescribed? If its the former then it makes a huge difference to your position in these discussions.

no i'm not on it for the epilepsy at all, strictly speaking i'm not keto at all, my carb levels are too high i'm just low carb (60g ish a day). the usual level for keto is under 50g and for the effective epilepsy treatment it is below 20g carb a day. my little venture into ketosis for a month resulted in a constant headache for a bout 2 weeks, i raised my carb level to just over 50g and it went away. doesn't hurt to try different things (except my daft head!!) but ketosis wasn't for me as for a mainstream veiw, well if i'm going to turn it into a business i have to knowledge about all kinds of diets and nutrtion... i know very little about vegan dieting for instance. i'm also very interested in finding out about the psychology of food disorders.
