Has anybody else noticed that high carb comfort foods are trying to sneak in? I did really well without much bread all summer. Last week I bought a loaf of walnut bread. I only had 2 slices (they are very small) and have put the rest in the freezer. It tastes lovely toasted, this way I can allow myself a slice once a while. I love home made soups. In the past I always made them with potatoes but they are ok without, like the broccoli soup I am making just now. As this is my first winter on my new eating regime, I have to be careful not to allow to many starchy carbs in. I feel so much better without them.

Know what you mean about bread..... I do love bread, and have found I am eating a bit more.... I try and keep an eye on my protein, fat, carb wheel - sometimes it looks good, other times it looks carb heavy. I TRY to eat more or the same no of protein Grms as carb Grms.... As winter approaches this will be harder - mmmm crusty bread with soup slurp.

I love bread too but it didn't do me any favours in the past. Do we actually "need" more carbs in winter? Probably not, it is one of those ideas that we had about the foods we thought we couldn't live without. Starchy carbs are a trigger food for me, it sends me on a sugar-insulin rollercoaster and I make bad food choices. As my protein is as high as I can manage as a vegetarian, I will add more healthy fats to my diet. They take a long time to digest, therefore keep me fuller for longer.

I went crazy yesterday and ate very unhealthy carbs I paid for it on the scale today and I am not doing it anymore. Yeck! I even feel awful today.

I know what you mean. Even the next day is messed up. In the past I didn't listen to my body well and felt awful most of the time anyway. But now I feel the difference it makes, like feeling sluggish, tired, thirsty. This makes my cravings easier to deal with. I just remember how I feel afterwards and it usually helps to overcome the craving.

gluten free so it doesn't hurt as much. How about some sweet potatoes?

I LOVE CARBS! Bread, pasta, rice! But im changing from a carb girl to a protein girl. I get carbs anyway cause they are everywhere and in almost everything! I eat my cheeseburges from the cheeseburger guy with no bread and I ate my chili with no pasta! But i miss it very much! But i love the way i feel without them better. When i eat carbs i do whole grains as im sure everyone else who is serious about their lifestyle change is doing. I have a loaf of raison bread in my freezer (very small slices also)and occasionally i thaw one out to eat.

Heather, I don't think it is gluten sensitivity, more the sugar rush and shifts in body water. I eat sweet potatoes occasionally, will do more often now if I still crave starch. They make yummy soups.

Stacy, that's what I do! I miss carbs but the way I feel without them, makes it all worthwhile.

Way to think ahead. What do you put in your soup? I need to make soup this winter instead of eating baked potatoes.

I'm thinking a pumpkin, black bean, corn soup today.

I usually fry an onion and garlic, add whatever vegetable I like (today a whole head of broccoli), add boiling water and vegetable stock, boil for 20 to 30 min, blend, add beaten egg or cream or top with nuts or cheese. Very simple. Works well with pumpkin, sweet potato, leeks, mushrooms etc. I like simple recipes with few ingredients
