I paid VERY close attention to what I ate, and even though I sometimes had things that perhaps were not the best for me I controlled portion size pretty well. I have also continued running, albeit only 3 times a week. I am going to work my way up in terms of distance and frequency slowly to avoid injury. Right now I am running at about a 13 minute mile pace, which is a little sad, but I can maintain that pace for 3 miles, so at least there's that. It won't get any better unless I keep trying.
I'm feeling a little more confident about my ability to do this. I think remaining positive is the most important component. I am also learning more about portion size just because I have bothered to think about and look into, for instance, how many calories, grams of fat, etc. are in a Jimmy John's sandwich.
